The H1N1 Virus: Preventing It From Harming You

Much of the recent media coverage of the H1N1 virus has focused on whether its victims should get the vaccine. That’s a call only you can make, so we recommend researching before settling on a course of action. Here are some alternatives to the vaccine that can help you stay healthy and safe.

How do I best safeguard myself?

Naturally, you want to avoid contracting the virus at all costs. The most crucial step you can do to protect yourself from the virus is to fortify your immune system. Our goal is to strengthen our immune system to combat the infection successfully. Immune system enhancement should begin while the individual is still healthy and shows no virus symptoms.

The virus can enter your body through your lips and nose. We can’t stop people from coming into contact with the virus, but we can slow its spread. Here are a few easy things to try…

How to Avoid Contracting the H1N1 Virus: Nine Steps

You’ve heard it a million times, but washing your hands is still one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the virus. Surfaces can harbor viruses for a long time, perhaps several days. Use soap and warm water to clean your hands properly. For at least 30 seconds, use a circular motion to clean your entire hand. Just enough time to sing “Happy Birthday” to yourself. After thoroughly drying your hands, use the paper towel to open the restroom door. Antibacterial wipes and gel should be brought along if you don’t have access to a sink.
Please refrain from touching your eyes, nose, or face. Avoid putting things like pencils or fingers in your mouth. Before you dine or snack, wash your hands or apply an antibacterial gel.

You probably aren’t hearing much about keeping your nostrils clean. But this is a crucial next step that must be taken. It takes 2-3 days for the H1N1 virus to multiply and exhibit symptoms following infection in the nose. Nose washing is something you should do every day. You can accomplish this with the help of a Neti Pot, a nasal cleansing pot available at Walgreens and other pharmacies. A saline solution (salt water) is added to the bank to flush the nasal passages. Numerous issues, including congestion and allergies, can be alleviated with a good nasal cleaning. If you don’t have a pot or are uncomfortable using one, use cotton swabs dipped in warm water and salt to clean out each nostril. Do this every day.

It would be best to gargle twice daily with warm water, salt, or Listerine to keep your throat clean. Gargling is a prophylactic measure that can be taken because the virus can enter the body through the throat.
To stop the spread of viruses, you must hydrate with warm liquids like tea, broth, and soup. Get your daily quota of warm drinks in. Chicken soup is among the most effective warm beverages for whatever reason (though no one seems to know precisely why).
Vitamin D (a pro-hormone) is a supplement that helps maintain a healthy immune system. You should take a vitamin D supplement if you don’t obtain 10–20 minutes of noon sun daily (without sunscreen). Recent research indicates that many people are deficient in Vitamin D. Many worldwide are experiencing health problems like bone fractures and general degeneration due to insufficient vitamin D intake. Vitamin D3 is a good choice; take around 1,000–1,800 IU daily. Sunlight causes the skin to produce 10,000–20,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily. There is no evidence that daily supplementation with 1,000–1,800 IU is harmful. The body stores vitamin D generated in the skin from the sun for a more extended period than orally. However, not everyone can spend time in the sun every day, so taking a Vitamin D supplement is a good idea.
Daily multivitamins, antioxidants, and fish oil supplements strengthen your immune system. Check the label to see if your multi includes Zinc. If you want to give your immune system a true boost and maintain your health, you need to take supplements of pharmaceutical grade.

CONCENTRATE ON THE 3 S’S (STRESS, REST, and SUGAR). Because stress depletes vitamin C, it lowers resistance to illness and increases the likelihood of infection. Avoid unnecessary anxiety by recognizing and respecting your boundaries. Laughter is a fantastic stress reliever. Increasing humor intake is associated with less stress and a more robust immune system. Sleeping for 7 to 9 hours nightly is recommended for optimal health. Many people don’t get enough sleep, increasing their stress levels and lowering their ability to fight illness. Sugar inhibits the function of white blood cells, which generally eliminate viruses. Reduce your daily intake of refined sugar to no more than 50 grams. Agave nectar is an excellent substitute for white sugar. Since the “3 S’s” are crucial to good health, we will publish more in-depth articles on them shortly.
Drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily and eat nutritious foods. Dehydration raises vulnerability to viral infection by drying up mucus membranes and creating openings in the membrane. Maintain a healthy immune system by eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Eating a salad every day can help keep the doctor away.
