How Christians Can Respond to a Time of Healing

Many people go through what is considered a healing crisis when they begin to unearth, dig, and shed physical, emotional, and spiritual detritus from their inner and outward selves. During this recovery phase, you may feel total disarray or bewilderment as toxins from your mind, body, and spirit rise to the surface. When this occurs, it is called a “healing crisis.” You’ve confronted your inner demons and brought them into the light. The aftermath might feel like everything from a roller coaster of emotions to physical disease or weakness to a complete breakdown of rational thought and emotion.

Our minds and bodies have compartments much like those found in a house. We may not pay close attention to the state of our physical environment because we are too preoccupied with other tasks. When we clean, we throw things into drawers and closets without giving them much care. Mail and papers will be tossed into baskets or piled on a shelf. We will stack or stack and store unneeded stuff in the garage. For most of the year, we locate storage for our belongings until we can go through and meticulously organize everything. Sometimes it’s easier to sweep the clutter under the bed rather than take the time to dispose of it properly.

The day comes when you finally decide to clean your home like spring. It’s time to sort through your storage areas and remove anything collecting dust or taking up valuable space. You understand how difficult this task is. Days, maybe even weeks may pass. Taking things from here and there, your house is starting to look like something out of “Hoarders.” Things tend to get disorganized and scattered as you go through what to keep store, and get rid of.

The order of your home will quickly fall apart as you remove things from their temporary locations and begin a thorough interior cleaning. You may have lived with the illusion that everything in your home was for weeks, months, or even years when, in reality, you were hoarding unnecessary items in dark, hard-to-reach corners. When you’re at home during a crisis, it can be difficult to cope. Initially, you might wish you hadn’t done anything at all. Still, as you tackle the clutter one item at a time and your home gradually becomes more orderly, you’ll likely experience a sense of liberation and mastery.

The mind, body, and spirit can feel similar discomfort, disarray, and confusion when cleansing or healing the inner and outer self. Toxins (pesticides, chemicals, garbage) and old hurts (fears, memories, buried emotions) are released from your body’s tissues and flood your system during physical or emotional cleaning.

The healing crisis is integral to restoring your inner and exterior health, so resist the urge to give up and revert to your old ways. It’s the way to true independence, spiritual well-being, and physical health, yet it may be terrifying and overwhelming at the same time.

Amid a healing crisis, consider the following advice.

First, you shouldn’t panic. Toxins that may hurt our mental and physical health are released whenever we start clearing out our physical or emotional trash. Fear can be banished with knowledge, and you can keep moving toward your goals.

Use meditation or deep breathing to dissipate any intense toxic feelings if you’re suffering an avalanche of emotional agony or old hurt. Start by focusing your breath on the area of your body where you’re experiencing the most discomfort or tension.

Third, walk often while reciting a mantra or sacred phrase to keep your mind from wandering to unpleasant places. The name “Jesus” can be used as a powerful mantra, as God has promised, “I will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on me.”

Fourth, keep in mind that this, too, shall pass as fast as it came. After many down days, you may find that releasing these negative emotions has left you feeling lighter and more at ease.

5. Seek God’s guidance and strength through meditation on or reading His Word. Worship the Lord with music and dance.

Write down your thoughts in a journal. Writing things down in a journal effectively clears your mind and gains perspective on the current situation. Thank the Lord in your writing for being faithful and saving you with his blood.

7 If you’re fasting because you’re trying to rid your body of toxins, drink lots of water or diluted fruit juices. The chemicals absorbed into the bloodstream will have less effect thanks to fruit juice.

8. If you’re experiencing bodily symptoms, try taking it easy, relaxing with Christian yoga or stretching, or watching an uplifting film.

Recovery from an emotional or physical breakdown often follows a transformative event. When you attempt to improve your mental or physical health, you may undergo a phase of change in which your body or soul purges the old in favor of the new. Knowing the warning signals of a healing crisis can lessen your anxiety and avoid abandoning your recovery too soon.
