Materials

The stocking pattern is a fully-fashioned style with a traditional back seam, hemmed edge, and keyhole opening. This classic piece can be created from cotton or flannel for an elegant appearance; wool provides a more rustic character. When completed, these stockings can be filled with small gifts for Christmas morning, and ribbons can be hung at their top for easy display on hooks or mantels.

To create a stocking, you will need two coordinating fabrics and this downloadable pattern. Pattern pieces can be cut out with fabric scissors or paper scissors; to sew, a sewing machine with a 1/4-inch seam allowance should work best (although hand stitching could still work!). Needle and thread can also be used, although machine sewing may make this task simpler.

Once your pattern pieces have been cut out, place them together with right sides and right sides facing inwards and sew along each edge, leaving an allowance of 2″ unsewn in the lining fabric for turning. Be sure to backstitch at both the beginning and end of your seam. After finishing sewing up each side, turn the stocking right side out and press its seams before stitching a ribbon or other decoration to the top if desired.

To create a stocking cuff, cut out an 11-1/2” long and 5-1/4” wide strip from contrasting fabric. Fold this lengthwise with right sides together, right sides touching; sew a 1/2” seam along both long edges to form a tube shape before tucking it inside your stocking by matching up raw edges.

Add an individualized touch to your handmade stocking by embroidering names in a complementary color, such as red. These easy projects make excellent holiday decor features.

Personalized stockings make the perfect holiday present, but they also serve as keepsakes to be treasured in years to come. Kids of all ages – adults included! – will appreciate these keepsakes made just for them, while their simplicity allows you to make multiple versions for everyone in your family easily.

Patterns

No matter the size or style, there’s sure to be the ideal pattern available to create mini, little, and Teeny Weeny stockings for the family pet. From easy paw-shaped socks with large enough pockets for treats for canines or felines alike to adding adorable prints and fabrics for even greater charm, there is sure to be one just right.

Start by downloading the free pattern from the link below, which will print on two A4/8.5″ x 11″ pages and will require taping together along their edges in order to prevent clipped paper pieces from getting trapped under your sewing needle. Be sure to read each step thoroughly so you understand precisely what’s needed before beginning sewing; additionally, choose fabrics that combine durability with softness so your furry pal will love his stocking!

For your leading stocking, cut out a rectangle of fabric measuring 14.5″ wide by 9″. When using printed material, be sure to choose colors that complement those on both its cuff and backside. A rotary cutter should suffice for straighter parts, while scissors may be necessary for more complex curves.

Once all the pieces have been cut out, it’s time to sew. You have several options when it comes to lining your stocking with batting; using it will create a puffier look; however, if you prefer a more natural-looking result without it, then sew using RST stitch length, making sure seam allowances don’t exceed 1/4″.

After your stocking has been lined, carefully trim it along its curves and top edge so that when turned right side out, it lays flat. If desired, darts can also be added, but be wary not to cut into seam allowances!

Once your stocking is trimmed to perfection, fold and press with seams facing in. Now you have a double-thick tube suitable for hanging from a mantelpiece; add an extra special touch by stitching a ribbon to its base for an added special touch!
